Archbishop Michael L. Fitzgerald, considered one of the Roman Catholic Church’s leading experts on Islam, will offer a lecture on "The Church and Islam: 50 Years after Nostra Aetate."
Archbishop Fitzgerald is a member of the Society of Missionaries of Africa and was the papal nuncio to Egypt and delegate to the Arab League from 2006 until his retirement in 2012. Previously, he had been secretary (1987-2002) and then president (2002-2006) of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID); he was ordained bishop in 1991 and archbishop in 2002 upon his appointment as PCID president. He has also taught at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies and at the University of Makerere, Kampala, Uganda. He studied Arabic at the University of London and has long been a strong advocate of interreligious dialogue.

The Notre Dame Forum welcomed Catherine Cornille, chairwoman of Boston College's theology department, and Cyril O'Regan, Huisking professor of theology at Notre Dame, to discuss "The Place of Theology at a Catholic University."
The 2014-2015 Notre Dame Forum is exploring the question "What do Notre Dame graduates need to know?" Forum events are focusing on the knowledge graduates require to face the challenges and opportunities that exist for them as participants in a democratic society, citizens of a wider world and people of faith.
